Work When You Work – EFFICIENCY (from “Eat That Frog”)

Work When You Work

To keep your life in balance, you should resolve to work all the time you work.  When you go to work, put your head down and work the whole time.  Start a little earlier, stay a little later, and work a little harder (and smarter).  Don’t waste time.  The time that we waste at work often has to be taken away from the members of our families.  We have to either stay late or take work home and work in the evenings.  By not working efficiently and effectively during our workdays, we create unnecessary stress and deprive the members of our family of the very best person we can possibly be.  There is a story of a little girl who goes to her mother and asks, “Mommy, why does Daddy bring a briefcase full of work home each night and never spend time with the family?”  The mother replies sympathetically, “Well, honey, you have to understand – Daddy can’t get his work done at the office so he has to bring it home and get caught up here.”  The little girl then asks, “If that’s the case, why don’t they put him in a slower class?”

Eat That Frog, and Obliterate That Elephant

In line with getting out of the “Comfort Zone”  I’m going back to Brian Tracy’s “Eat That Frog”, the famous book about GETTING MORE DONE.  Again, the concept of eating a frog is simple….if the first thing you do every morning is eat a live frog – a.k.a execute your most difficult task – the rest of the day will be a breeze, and the accomplishment of that 1 nagging goal will fuel the furnace of achievement for the remainder of your day.  Since we THINK BIG in ths room, forget frogs…let’s slash, eat, and obliterate the ELEPHANTS standing in our way, be it projects, accounts, or macro initiatives we need to “check off” to breakthrough a barrier and get closer to our goals, both professionally and personally.  When objectives and to-do lists sit in our outlook tasks or SalesForce.com or pads of paper, it’s like an elephant on our chest…let’s all keep the fire burning and remove the elephants, eat the frogs, and continue to impress clients, colleagues, and friends/family with our unyielding VISION and ACTION.

A few quotes:

Every great man has become great, every successful man has succeeded, in proportion as he has confined his powers to one particular channel. – Orison Sweet Marden

“You cannot eat every frog in the pond, but you can eat the biggest and ugliest one.” – Brian Tracy

The lion is most handsome when looking for food.” –Rumi

A quick excerpt:

Your attitude toward time , your “time horizon”, has an enormous impact on your behavior and your choices.  People who take a long view of their lives and careers always seem to make much better decisions about their time and activities than people who give very little thought to the future.  Successful people have a clear future orientation.  They think five, ten, and twenty years out into the future.  They analyze their choices and behaviors in the present to make sure that what they are doing today is consistent with the long-term future that they desire.”

Vision and Resolve

How many times have you thought to yourself, “well if I could do anything I would….”  Stop thinking, and start planning….and more importantly, start DOING. Why not you? Why not now?

“First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.”
-Epictetus

What would you do today, if tomorrow were not promised?” – Anonymous

Brian Tracy Motivation – Eat That Frog – FOCUS

Mark Twain once said that “if the first thing you do each morning is to eat a live frog, you can go through the day with the satisfaction of knowing that it is probably the worst thing that is going to happen to you all day long.”

This is a wonderful time to be alive. There have never been more possibilities and opportunities for you to achieve more of your goals than exist today, but as Thomas Friedman says “We live in a world where more things than ever are possible, but less things than ever are guaranteed”. As perhaps never before in human history, you are actually drowning in options. In fact, there are so many things that you can do, and need to do, that your ability to decide among them may be the critical determinant of what you accomplish in life. If you are like most people today (right everyone?), you are overwhelmed with too much to do and too little time. As you struggle to get caught up, new tasks and responsibilities keep rolling in, like the waves of the ocean.

THE NEED TO BE SELECTIVE:
For this reason, and perhaps more than ever before, your ability to select your most important task (hence # 1 Goal of the Day) at each moment, and get it done quickly and well, will probably have more impact on your success than any other skill or quality you develop.

“An average person who develops the habit of setting CLEAR priorities and getting important tasks completed quickly will run circles around a genius who talks a lot and makes wonderful plans but gets very little done”

Motivational Quote of the Day – Elinor Smith on Making Things Happen…

“It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.”
-Elinor Smith
